As of 1.3.24, the employment opportunities for international students have been expanded.

For international students in Germany, a part-time job offers a wide range of opportunities: gaining valuable experience in the professional world, making initial contacts, getting to know the German culture, and supplementing the financing of their studies.

During their studies, all international students generally have the right to pursue a part-time job in Germany. However, residence regulations limit the scope of their employment.  In addition, different regulations apply to citizens of the European Union (EU) than to non-EU citizens. From March 1, 2024, an amendment to the Skilled Immigration Act will come into force that will increase the scope of employability for international students.

What exactly does this mean for international students at TU Dortmund University?

For third-country nationals studying in Germany on a student visa, the opportunities for part-time employment will be extended. The previous annual working time account of 120 full or 240 half days will be increased to 140 full or 280 half working days. Alternatively, the new regulation allows students to work up to 20 hours a week. The amount of the salary and the subject of the employment are irrelevant.

This also applies during stays to look for a training or study place, during language course stays and during preparatory study measures. This change creates more flexibility, makes it easier to secure a livelihood and facilitates the transition to the labour market. This makes it easier to decide to come to Germany and to take up a course of study or vocational training and to stay here as a skilled worker after graduation.
