StartSmart - the guide for international first-year students
Welcome to StartSmart!
You are enrolled – and that means you have already taken an important step! Now it’s time to prepare for your upcoming study experience at TU Dortmund University. StartSmart is here to support you along the way, helping you get informed, arrive well prepared and start your studies with confidence.
This course takes you step by step through the most important topics you should be familiar with before and after your arrival. This will make it easier for you to find your way around Dortmund and TU Dortmund University and focus on what matters most: your studies and your new life in Dortmund.
Take your time exploring the different sections - pre-arrival, after arrival and during your studies - and feel free to come back later if you want to look something up.

How does StartSmart help me start my studies?
The Moodle course covers a wide range of topics related to the time before your arrival, the start of your studies and student life at TU Dortmund. The content is presented mainly through short videos, complemented by helpful links, tips and interactive quizzes.
This gives you the opportunity to get first insights into campus life, get to know important contacts and explore different topics related to your arrival and studies – all at your own pace.
The course is fully bilingual. Simply choose in the settings whether you would like to view the content in German or English.
Topics are - amongst others:
- What do I have to do again after enrollment?
- Where can I get information about languages, e.g. learning German during my studies?
- What would experienced students at the TU Dortmund advise me?
- What should I know about insurance, financing my studies, or re-registration after the first semester?
- Which portals and platforms are important for studying at the TU Dortmund? What is the difference between moodle, BOSS and LSF?
- What do university facilities such as university sports offer me, why is the TU app useful and what does AStA actually do? And what were the student councils again...?

How exactly do I access the course?
To access TU Dortmund University’s Moodle platform, your enrollment must be complete. After that, you’ll need to activate your university account.
Then go to the Moodle website and change the language settings to English.
Then go to “Course Search” (if you stay on “Dashboard,” you won’t be able to find the course unless you’ve already enrolled in it)—see the image on the right.
Then enter “StartSmart” in the search field (see right) and click on the course to register.
