Public Broadcasting Service Fee (Rundfunkbeitrag)
In Germany, all households are charged a broadcasting fee of currently 18,36 EUR to finance public broadcasting service. Students are generally also obligated to pay this fee. By the obligatory registration with the city of Dortmund you will be registered for this fee and requested for payment by the “Beitragsservice”. You can find further information on the fee also for tenants in student dormitories on the websites of the Beitragsservice and the Studierendenwerk Dortmund.
Social Contribution
All students must pay the social contribution for each semester in order to get fully enrolled. This social contribution is not a tuition fee and generally payable by all students (also exchange students), regardless of when they enroll.
Upon receipt of your temporary certificate of enrollment, you will receive a request for payment of the social contribution. Please do not transfer the social contribution until you have received your temporary certificate of enrollment.

Extension for one semester
We are pleased that you are enjoying your time at TU Dortmund University and that you would like to extend your Erasmus+ stay by a further semester!
Requirements for the extension
In order for you to stay with us for a further semester, the following steps must be completed:
- Obtain approval: Both, your home university and your Departmental Coordinator at TU Dortmund University must agree to the extension in written form.
- Submit documents: Please upload both confirmations via our online extension form.
Support with formalities
As part of the form, we will assist you with further organisational steps:
- Residence permit: We will check whether you need an appointment with the Foreigners’ Registration Office and will be happy to help you arrange one.
- Accommodation: If you are living in a dormitory run by the Studierendenwerk Dortmund, you can use the form to request an extension of your rental agreement.
Note: Please be aware that an extension of your accommodation cannot be guaranteed due to limited capacity. It is possible that you will need to find accommodation yourself outside the Studierendenwerk Dortmund’s dormitories for the second semester.
Important time restrictions
For logistical reasons, an extension is generally only advisable within an academic year (from the winter semester to the summer semester). An extension beyond the summer semester into a new academic year is not recommended and is usually not possible.
Extension for one month
Would you like to extend your Erasmus+ stay by just one month due to exams?
Please fill in our online extension form so that we can assist you with the administrative procedures, such as extending your residence permit and rental agreement if necessary.
If you have to stop your stay prematurely for health, personal or any other reasons, please contact the International Office (erasmus@tu-dortmund.de) as soon as possible! You will then receive all important information about necessary steps by e-mail. If possible, please also contact your Departmental Coordinator.
