Health Insurance for International Students

International students are required to enroll in public health insurance for the entire duration of their studies.

Exeption: If you are in a preparatory course, e.g., DSH language preparation course, are a regular student over 30 years of age, or are a doctoral student, you must register with a private health insurance provider and have your statutory or private health insurance company exempt you from compulsory insurance.

Application for health insurance certificate: Electronic Student Notification Procedure
  1. Contact: Before enrollment and after receiving your visa, contact your responsible statutory or private health insurance provider. The choice of health insurance lies solely with the students and cannot be determined or recommended by the university.
  2. Requesting the Certificate: Request a health insurance certificate through the electronic Student Notification Procedure (SMV). Paper notifications from health insurance providers will no longer be accepted during enrollment. This certificate confirms whether you are insured or can be exempted from mandatory insurance, e.g., if you participate in the DSH language preparation course, are a regular student, are over 30 years old, or are pursuing a doctorate.
  3. Submission to the University: Ensure that your health insurance provider sends the certificate to the university before your enrollment and after receiving your visa. Also submit the confirmation of health insurance or exemption via the digital procedure at the statutory health insurance provider. The sender number for TU Dortmund for the SMV is: H0003158.
  4. Reporting Changes: If you change your university, health insurance provider, or insurance status, you must request and submit a new health insurance certificate.
  5. Enrollment: Only when this confirmation is submitted to the admissions office can you officially enroll.
  6. Attention: If you do not pay your health insurance contributions, the university will receive a notification and you will be immediately expelled.

Summary
  • For statutory health insurance: Request the electronic proof of health insurance through the digital process at the statutory health insurance provider. The admissions office will be informed that you are registered with statutory insurance.
  • For private health insurance: Also request an exemption from mandatory statutory insurance via digital procedures at a statutory health insurer.
