Language Requirements

To be admitted to a degree program, you need to prove that you have sufficient language skills. 

German Language Requirements

The following recognized German language certificates meet the language requirements for studying at TU Dortmund University:

  • Certificate of passing the DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang examination) (level 2 or 3). Only certificates from universities, colleges and preparatory courses whose examination regulations are registered with the German Rectors' Conference are recognized.
  • Test of German as a Foreign Language (TestDaF): Total TDN at least 16
  • Test of German as a Foreign Language (TestDaF) combined certificate: Total TDN at least 16
  • German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs - Second Level (DSD II)
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C2 (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom - GDS)
  • Central Upper School Examination of the Goethe-Institut (ZOP)
  • Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom (KDS) or Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS)
  • telc Deutsch C1­ University Certificate with the overall grade sufficient or better

English Language Requirements for Bilingual Degree Programs

For some degree programs or fields of study, both German and English language requirements apply. In addition to one of the previously mentioned recognized proofs of German language proficiency, proof of English proficiency at the B2 level is required.

English Language Requirements

The level of English proficiency required to study at TU Dortmund University depends on your intended degree program. Information on the classification of English language certificates can be found, among other places, in the the uni-assist Reference Framework for English Language Certificates (as of the 2024 summer semester).

The proof of English proficiency must be valid at the time of application and must be submitted no later than the respective application deadline. Late submissions are not accepted.
