Primary School Internships in Ireland

Gain teaching experience in Ireland - together with Post Primary Languages Ireland (PPLI)/Languages Connect, an organization commissioned by the Irish government to promote foreign languages in schools, we are trying to connect as many Dortmund students as possible to Ireland's elementary schools for support in German classes. Students from all school forms, Education Science and those working towards the DaF/DaZ Certificate may apply.

The Program: "Say Yes to Languages"

A new 10-week "Say Yes to Languages" module is currently being offered in the 5th and 6th grades in Irish elementary schools and aims to give pupils and teachers a taste of what it means to integrate additional languages alongside English and Irish in the primary classroom. Of the approximately 1,300 participating schools, around 100 currently offer the module for German. Tutors and assistants are being sought for this module.

In 10 one-hour units per school term, a foreign language is introduced to the pupils. As an expert in German, you will share your knowledge and experience from Germany as part of the internship and thus make foreign language lessons more tangible and entertaining for the primary school children. In the near future, language learning in Irish primary schools should not be limited to just the one-hour language lessons, but should also be integrated into other subjects. You could then also contribute your knowledge of the German language and culture in subjects such as Geography, History, Sports, etc.

You can find more information about the program in the online presentation with PPLI from December 2025 as well as in the videos in which the Irish schools share their experiences with the module:

How to Apply

We are not offering guaranteed placement, but will work with PPLI/Languages Connect to initiate contact with your desired school. You will need to discuss all details of the internship directly with the school during the application process. However, precisely because of their participation in the “Say Yes to Languages” module, the schools that work with PPLI have an increased interest in receiving internship applications from Germany.

  • Required Study Program
Students of teacher training (Lehramt) programs and Educational Science as well as students who are working towards the DaF/DaZ certificate are welcome to apply.
You do not necessarily have to be studying to become a primary school teacher or have German as a subject.
Please enquire with your department about whether the internship can be credited towards a compulsory part of your studies (e.g. as a DaF/DaZ internship, English Stay Abroad).
  • Duration
The module is offered over 10 weeks each school term (from the end of September or the end of February).  Schools would probably be most interested in applicants who could come for this entire module (or longer). However, schools may also welcome your support at other times or for shorter periods.
For English Lehramt, a stay of at least 12 weeks is recommended by your department in order to make credit approval for the Stay Abroad easier.
If you can be on site for the entire module, you could possible be employed as a tutor (a guest teacher, particularly interesting for students at the end of their studies) or as an assistant to the tutor. If your desired duration does not fit to the entire duration of the module, you may be able to support the tutor and the assistant as an intern. The different roles are explained in the presentation linked above.
  • Tasks During the Internship
In addition to assisting with the "Say Yes to Languages" module, schools may be interested in having you involved in other subjects and activities, which could make this a full-time internship (e.g. if this is required for credit recognition or for a scholarship). In this case, please indicate in your application the other areas in which you would like to support the school or gain experience.
  • Costs
School internshisp are generally not remunerated (there may be exceptions, but you should not expect this). You must therefore be able to cover your own local travel and living expenses. However, you can apply for a scholarship (e.g. Erasmus+) for your stay.
  • Accommodation in Ireland
You will generally have to organize your own accommodation, but the schools may have some useful tips. Also use the tips in our checklist for stays abroad.

Send your application to Laura Hope (going-abroadtu-dortmundde) in the International Office at least 4 months before the desired start date. We will work with PPLI/Languages Connect to try to establish contact with the desired school(s).

Internships may also be possible at shorter notice for a start from February 2026. Please send your application to Laura Hope ASAP (before Christmas).

Please send the following documents in English and preferably as one PDF:

  • Curriculum vitae (tips)
  • Covering letter
Please describe your strengths and interests. How would you like to creatively impart the German language and culture to the children at this school? Would you like to support the school in other subjects or areas?
  • English certificate of enrollment (in the campus portal)
  • A list of desired schools, ranked according to priority
You can find the participating schools for the relevant school term on the Languages Connect website. Please research the schools that are suitable for you in advance, for example on the basis of the foreign languages offered, your regional preferences and your other subject preferences, etc. Also bear in mind the cost of living for the individual regions (Dublin, for example, will be very expensive).
We will work with PPLI/Languages Connect to establich contact with the schools so that they will consider your application.
