Leonor Cunha receives DAAD Prize 2024
Leonor Cunha, a student from the Department of Statistics, is this year's winner of the DAAD Prize 2024. Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) honors international students who demonstrate both outstanding academic achievements and remarkable intercultural commitment. Dr. Barbara Schneider, Director of the International Office, presented the award to Ms. Cunha at the welcome event Come2Campus for new international students.
In her laudatory speech, Dr. Schneider highlighted the student’s extraordinary achievements: “With an impressive grade point average of 1.0, Ms. Cunha not only demonstrates a deep understanding of her subject, but also an outstanding perceptiveness. We are particularly impressed by her commitment to the international student community and her active involvement in various university committees.
The 22-year-old Portuguese student has been studying for a Master's degree in Econometrics at TU Dortmund University since the Winter semester 2022/23. In addition to her academic success, Cunha is involved in the student council and was instrumental in the re-accreditation of her degree program. She also works as a student assistant in the research group of Prof. Dr. Matei Demetrescu, where she demonstrates her scientific skills. She continues to develop her intercultural skills as a member of the university's English Theater Group.
In her acceptance speech, Cunha encouraged the new international students to actively participate in the university: “I can only encourage all of you who are starting your journey at TU Dortmund to enjoy all the opportunities you are given here. Student life is more than lectures and coursework: whether you want to get into sports, arts and culture, you want to learn a new language or meet new people, there is so much for you here besides a degree at the end of the line. So join a team, join a group, go to your student council events, get involved! Make the most of it.”
