International Teaching Internship in the Ruhr Area
Due to the cooperation between TU Dortmund University and the International School Ruhr (IS Ruhr) in Essen, full-time teaching internships in English can also be organized for our bilateral/university and ISEP exchange partners.
These teaching internships can be conducted in both primary and secondary schools. Credits points can be acquired through TU Dortmund University.
Since the regular internship language is English, the interns must have an excellent command of English. German language skills are not required. The internship is open to students in degree programs that qualify to teach as well as other fields of study that qualify for employment in child and youth work.
In general, teaching internships ranging from 4 weeks to 6 months are possible. An internship in secondary school should ideally last 2-3 months, an internship in primary schools should last longer.
Start and end dates are flexible, but we recommend that interns first take part in the 4-week German Intensive Course, which is offered free of charge in September and March, before the internship starts.
In principle, an internship can be completed in all subjects taught by the IS Ruhr. In particular, the school would like to offer support in the IB DP subjects (grades 11-12) biology, mathematics, chemistry, history, geography, English, Spanish, German and business administration.
The interns work in an international team of educators in the Primary Years Program (PYP), which is one of the most renowned educational programs in the world. The interns assist the teachers in the classroom and accompany the daily routine of the youngest students. The interns gain valuabe insights into lesson planning and get to know the approaches of IS Ruhr (examination cycles, examination units etc.). The participation in internal professional and joint meetings is planned as well.
Interns work in an experienced team of international educators and gain insight into the Cambridge IGCSE-Programm (the most popular international qualifications for 14-16 years old) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (a prestigious pre-university program recognized by leading universities worldwide). In addition to these international programs, interns will learn about the unique SBW approaches developed by the parent company in Switzerland: autonomous learning, coaching and hour compression. The interns support the SY teachers in their daily tasks and actively participate in classes, autonomous learning phases, etc. The SY teachers provide insights into lesson and curriculum planning and give the interns real teaching experience at a secondary school. The participation in internal professional and joint planning meetings is planned as well.
International School Ruhr (IS Ruhr)
The International School Ruhr is dedicated to promoting research-based learning and the pedagogical approaches of the SBW Haus des Lernens and the International Baccalaureate. In this sense, the school focuses on building lasting relationships in order to share its experience and knowledge with future teachers who are beginning their careers in education.
