Relocation, re-registration and deregistration
A change of residence - whether within Germany or abroad - entails a number of organizational tasks. It is particularly important for international students and researchers to find out about the necessary steps at an early stage.
Considerations and procedures
Moving within Germany requires good planning. First of all, tenants should terminate their current tenancy agreement in good time - the statutory notice period is usually three months. In addition, the new apartment must be registered in good time, as registration is mandatory in Germany. Registration with the residents' registration office must take place within two weeks of the move. Other important aspects are the re-registration of electricity, internet and insurance as well as updating your address with banks and authorities. You should find out about the necessary formalities in good time to ensure a smooth transition to your new home.

When leaving Germany after completing your studies, it is important to deregister with the relevant registration office in good time. To do this, you usually fill out a deregistration form in which you state your last residential address and the date of departure. In many cities, you can deregister in person, by post or online. Once you have successfully deregistered, you will receive a deregistration confirmation, which serves as important proof - for example, for future registrations abroad or for official purposes. It is advisable to complete this process before you finally leave the country in order to avoid any discrepancies or administrative complications.
Reporting deadlines
After moving in, you must register with the local immigration office within 14 days. You need the following documents for this:
- Valid passport
- Landlord's confirmation of residence with details of the landlord and move-in date
