Please pay attention to extra costs such as deposits or the broadcasting fees (Rundfunkbeitrag). Aside from that, you have to receive a confirmation letter by your landlord (Wohngeberbescheinigung) and use it to register your address at the Resident’s Registration Office. It is absolutely necessary to write your name on your doorbell and your mailbox.

Landlord’s Confirmation Letter: Information about the “Wohnungsgeberbestätigung”. According to § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, the “Wohnungsgeberbestätigung” in North Rhine-Westphalia must include the following information: address of the property owner (landlord), the move-in or move-out date, address of the new apartment and the name of the main tenant. You can send a completed confirmation letter electronically or via mail to the local Resident’s Registration Office.

“Ratgeber Lärm”. Information from The City of Dortmund’s Environmental Agency

Since 1 November 2015, a standardized Federal Registration Act has become effective for all federal states. According to § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG), the following applies to registration and deregistration:
(2) Whoever moves out of their apartment and does not move to another apartment within the country has to deregister with the Residents’ Registration Office within two weeks of their move.

Deregister yourself at the Foreigners Registration Office in Dortmund before you leave.

Tips for foreign students

Fraud on the housing market

Welcome to Dortmund! As an international student, you are faced with the challenge of finding accommodation in a new city. Unfortunately, there are always people on the housing market who try to take advantage of this situation. Here are some important tips on how to recognize scams and protect yourself:

  1. Be skeptical of overly cheap offers: Be suspicious of unusually low rental prices being offered to lure potential victims.
  2. View the apartment: Insist on viewing the apartment in person before making any financial commitments, as photos on the internet can be deceptive.
  3. No deposit before moving in: Be careful if the landlord asks you for a deposit or advance payment of the rent before you have seen the apartment or signed the rental agreement. Also, private apartment keys are never sent abroad.
  4. Check the rental agreement: Take the time to read the tenancy agreement thoroughly, paying particular attention to clauses relating to the amount of rent and any service charges.
  5. Check theidentity of the landlord: Make sure you can verify the identity of the landlord and search the internet for information about the landlord or rental company.

These tips will help you avoid fraud. Remember that there are many honest landlords who will be happy to help you find suitable accommodation. Good luck with your studies and your stay in Dortmund!
