The J1 visa for internships in the USA
What exactly is the J-1 visa?
This special visa enables international students and graduates to complete an internship in the USA and gain valuable professional experience there. An officially recognized sponsor is usually required for the application, who supervises the program and issues the necessary documents. As the entire process involves several steps - from the selection of the sponsor to the final consulate appointment - you should definitely allow at least six to eight weeks for the application to be processed. It is also important to note that your internship position does not have to be found yet for the application, but only has to be considered.
Further information on the J-1 visa can be found in our visa information.
Odyssey - Your Visa Sponsor

Who is Odyssey?
Odyssey is an officially recognized J-1 sponsor that helps students and graduates organize internships or work as camp counselors in the USA. As a sponsor, Odyssey takes over important tasks in the visa process, issues the necessary documents, accompanies applicants throughout the entire preparation process and serves as a contact for all questions concerning the J-1 visa.
The Scholarship
Odyssey also offers a particularly attractive scholarship opportunity:
A TU Dortmund University student planning an internship in the USA can receive a scholarship to fully cover the sponsorship fees - a saving of up to 1,895 US dollars, depending on the length of the internship. The internship does not have to be already determined.
Apply for this scholarship by January 1, 2026 (12pm EST)!
Here are the requirements for the Odyssey Self Placed J1 Intern or Trainee Scholarship
