Abdallah Abdelmonaem, a Master's student at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has received this year's DAAD Prize from TU Dortmund University. Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awards the prize for outstanding achievements by foreign students at German universities. As part of the "Come2Campus" welcome event in September, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schembecker, Vice President Finance, presented the student with the award, which recognizes him not only for his academic successes, but also for the outstanding commitment to the campus and the city community.

"The DAAD Prize is designed to recognize international students who demonstrate academic excellence and remarkable intercultural engagement. I am proud that TU Dortmund University has the opportunity to honor a student today whose numerous activities have more than qualified him for this award," said Prof. Dr. Schembecker in his laudatory speech.

After completing his Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in Egypt, Abdallah Abdelmonaem transferred to TU Dortmund University in the Winter semester 2019/20 and initially studied in the English-language Master's degree program Automation & Robotics. With his desire to change this degree program, he learned German in a very short time and reached the required C1 level to then continue his academic education in the Winter semester 2021/22 in the Master Mechanical Engineering. He is currently in his fourth semester and is writing his Master's thesis at a company.

Commitment to cultural exchange

Mr. Abdelmonaem stood out in his application with his commitment in many ways: In addition to his very good academic performance, Mr. Abdelmonaem has excelled as a student advisor for the international students of the English-language Master's degree program in Manufacturing Technology. He also provides professional support to students as a mentor, helping them select courses, plan their course of study, and develop their academic skills.

In his first year of his studies in Dortmund, he has also been a “Deutschlandstipendiat” (German Scholarship Holder) and, since September 2022, an active member of the TU Dortmund Formula Student Team GET Racing Dortmund e.V. As a mentor, he also assisted international first-year students with their orientation at TU Dortmund University during the welcome and orientation event "Come2Campus" in 2022. In addition to this commitment on campus, he has been supporting the “Wohl-Tun e.V.” project in Dortmund since March 2021, which provides low-threshold services for housing and the homeless.

In his acceptance speech during the "Come2Campus" welcome event, Abdelmonaem encouraged the new international students to broaden their perspectives beyond campus life: "Life at the university is not just about academic education. It is also about personal growth and community engagement. My experience in Germany has been truly transformative and has broadened my horizons in ways I could have never imagined."

He concluded by emphasizing that this award is not only a recognition of his achievements, but also a tribute to the supportive and inclusive environment that TU Dortmund University has provided him: "I am grateful to the university for providing me with the platform to thrive and for encouraging me to pursue excellence in both my academic and social endeavors."
