Enrolled—but not yet in Germany?

Late Arrival

Students should be in Dortmund by the start of the lecture period at the latest. “Late arrival” means that students arrive in Dortmund after the lecture period has already begun. Here you will find important information regarding starting your studies on time and the “Late Arrival Letter.”

Start of Studies

Just in time for the start of the semester in Germany

To ensure a successful start to your studies, you should arrive on campus in time for the start of classes. Although late enrollment is possible under certain conditions, it may result in you missing important courses and deadlines and prevent you from properly beginning your studies.

Haven't enrolled yet?

If you have received an admission letter with an extended enrollment deadline, you can enroll within that timeframe. No additional confirmation is required. You can also take advantage of the option to enroll for the next semester if you have received admission that spans multiple semesters.

We recommend that you wait to enroll if you

  • do not yet have a visa or
  • are unsure whether you’ll be able to enter Germany in time for the start of the semester.

What is a "Late Arrival Letter"?

A Late Arrival Letter is an official letter from the university confirming that, under certain circumstances, a student may arrive late and begin their studies. The letter can, for example, be used to support a visa application or as proof for government agencies.

Withdrawal from Enrollment

As long as you pay the semester contribution and have valid health insurance in Germany, you remain enrolled—regardless of whether you are taking courses or not. Even if you are not on campus, you are still required to pay health insurance contribution and the semester contribution.

Timing of Withdrawal

Withdrawal before the start of the lecture period:

If you withdraw by the Friday before the start of the lecture period, you can receive a full refund of the semester contribution. Alternatively, you may choose not to request a refund. In this case, the semester fee you have already paid can be applied toward a future re-enrollment. If you re-enroll in the following semester, you will start in the first academic semester, as the previous semester does not count as an academic semester.

ㅤㅤㅤ

Withdrawal after the start of the lecture period:

The current semester counts as your first academic semester. If you re-enroll in the following semester, you will therefore begin in your second academic semester. Under certain conditions, you may apply to the AStA for a pro-rata refund of the portion of the semester ticket fee.

If you withdraw from the university by the Friday before the start of the lecture period, you can receive a full refund of the semester contribution. To do so, submit a refund request through the Campus Portal. If you withdraw after the start of the lecture period, the semester contribution can only be refunded on a pro-rata basis by the AStA.
