Teaching Internship at Albuquerque Academy

TU Dortmund University's students have the exclusive opportunity to carry out a six-week teaching internship at the renowned Albuquerque Academy in New Mexico. The internship typically takes place from the end of August until the beginning of October.

Albuquerque Academy was founded in 1955 as a private school for grades 6 through 12. Each class typically has an average of just 14.8 students, each of which pays more than US $18,000 for one school year. The quality and facilities at the school are accordingly high. Interns are able to get actively involved in the school and may eventually work independently and create a class plan on their own. Still, the supervision through the teaching staff is excellent, and the learning effects are amplified through regular and intensive feedback.

Details about the Internship

  • Duration: six weeks, start date only at the end of August/beginning of September
A start may be offered in spring 2021 - further information available in the fall
  • Tasks: Support the teaching staff in German language classes; observation in other subjects possible
  • Accommodation: usually in a host family

Program alumni are available to help with questions.

The city of Albuquerque has a population of over 500,000 and is marked by an interesting style of architecure, influenced by the Pueblo Indians. The Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande River form the boundaries of the city; there is plenty to do for those who love being in nature. The city is still quite warm at this time of the year, but in the evening or in the mountains it can get quite cool. One of Albuquerque's highlights is the"International Balloon Fiesta" at the beginning of October.

Application Process

The internship is available for sudents from all degree programs. However, priority may be given to those students who are working on the DaF/DaZ Certificate or who already have teaching experience.

Applicants should be independent and outgoing as well as open for new cultures. You should enjoy creativity and sharing the German (and Ruhr) culture with others.

The application deadline usually ends in March for internships beginning in August.

The position unfortunately cannot be offered for 2023. We will inform you here in case the position will be on offer again for 2024.

The internship is not a paid position, but the selected intern will receive a travel stipend through the PROMOS scholarship program.

The intern will usually live with a host family, and the intern will make a contribution (usually US$600) for room and board.
