Successful studies begin with choosing the right degree program. This is where the twelve-part video series of the International Office comes in: In order to give international prospective students an insight into the ten degree programs most in demand by foreign students, a total of 44 international students, alumni and department members were interviewed. Two additional films on the topic of study and campus life complement this information offer.

"With the video series in documentary style, we aim to create an insightful, digital information base for international prospective students who are usually still in their home country at the stage of deciding on a degree program," says Annette Herberg, International Office, who supervised the video project in close cooperation with the participating departments. In addition to information about the degree program and career prospects, the information films also focus on topics such as the required language and subject knowledge, different teaching and learning cultures, or the support services.

The open interview style of the videos enabled a broad spectrum of experience and perspectives to be represented: A total of 27 international students and alumni report on their interests, motivations, and insights, and provide tips on starting their studies.  In addition, Deans of Studies, professors or academic coordinators as well as representatives of the Division of Foreign Languages (zhb), Studierendenwerk Dortmund and the International Office provide information about study requirements, content and perspectives as well as support services. The international interviewees come from 17 different countries and 4 continents and thus reflect the internationality of the university. Since the films can be received differently by prospective students in different cultures, an intercultural trainer reviewed the reception of the videos in advance.

The six German-language Bachelor's degree programs and four English-language Master's degree programs in which the number of foreign students respectively degree-seeking students is highest are presented in the series. In order to give prospective students a realistic impression of everyday student life, the interview partners report in English or German according to the respective teaching language while the subtitles are provided in the accordingly other language. The video series was created in 2021 and 2022 and concluded with the video on the Bachelor of Computer Science at the end of 2022. The 3-4 minute videos are available on YouTube, the websites of the International Office and the according departments. The entire project was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the project NRWege ins Studium - Leuchttürme.
