International Office Receives Funding to Support Refugees

TU Dortmund's International Office successfully participated in the “NRWege Pathways into Studying – Support for Students of Refugee Experience at Universities in North Rhine-Westphalia from 2023 call for proposals from the NRW Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW NRW). In 2023, the International Office will receive around 411,000 euros for this. The program helps people with refugee experience who are willing and able to study to prepare for and successfully complete their studies.

TU Dortmund University applied for all four funding lines of the program and was ultimately awarded the bids. With this funding, language courses or study-related scholarships can now be offered to refugees. Part of the funding will be used for the Refugee Counseling and Integration Office, which has already existed in the International Office since 2017. The Refugee Counseling and Integration Office offers qualified counseling for the target group offers qualified consulting for the target group on such things as applications and student finance.

New career program in the works

The funding also makes it possible for the International Office to offer a career program called “CareerCompanion” – a digital service for international students and graduates with and without a refugee background, which is intended to accompany them through the final stage of their studies and into the professional world. “CareerCompanion” pools various services, events and consulting opportunities for developing interdisciplinary skills and offers resources such as videos on a wide range of topics related to starting a career.

“We’re delighted to have once again successfully secured funding for various support and integration measures. International students with and without a refugee background will continue to be supported in a variety of ways and accompanied along the way to a degree at TU Dortmund University and into professional life,” says Dr. Barbara Schneider, who manages the International Office.

Already funded by previous programs

The International Office had already received financial support from the previous NRWege programs. A significant part of this was used to fund the Refugee Counseling and Integration Office and its services, while the “NRWege Leuchttürme” ("NRWege Lighthouses") program made it possible to launch programs such as “Tandem2Job”, where experienced mentors help international students enter the job market. From the new funding provided by NRWege over several years, around 411,000 euros has been earmarked for 2023. MKW NRW has already committed to further funding for the following years.

In addition to the NRWege program, the International Office offers international TU students a wide range of support with regard to academics and careers. One example is the International Careers Fair, where employers from Dortmund and the surrounding region have been showcasing their businesses for eleven years.
