After moving to Dortmund

Registration of Residence

All residents of Germany must register with the residents' registration office (Bürgerbüro) in the city in which they live.

If you live in Dortmund, you must register with the City of Dortmund within two weeks of your arrival.
We will gladly answer any further questions you may have.

Third-country nationals with a residence permit in accordance with §§ 16-21 of the Residence Act who are resident in Dortmund, can have their registration carried out with the help of the Welcome Services team.
Send us the following documents to welcome.services@tu-dortmund.de in order to be registered:

  • Completed registration form
  • Landlord's confirmation (DE) completed by the landlord
  • Copy of the first page of the national passport
  • Copy of the visa
  • Copy of the entry stamp
  • Current residence permits, if applicable

The registration documents (registration certificate, tax identification number) as well as a letter of invitation to apply for a residence permit, if applicable, will be sent to you by mail afterwards. Please make sure that your mailbox is labelled accordingly.

Important note: Regardless of the registration of residence carried out by us, marriages and birth certificates of children under the age of 18 must be recognized and entered into the register of the city of Dortmund ("Melderegister").  We will be happy to inform you where you have to present yourself for this step and which country-specific documents are required for this. In principle, the original documents (marriage and birth certificates) and translations issued in Germany are always required.

Citizens of member states of the European Union (EU citizens) who move to Dortmund from abroad can only register at the Citizens' Services in the city centre. Unfortunately, the Welcome Services team is not able to handle the registration.

The following documents are required for the registration:

  • Identity card or passport
  • Completed registration form (DE)
  • Landlord's confirmation (DE) completed by the landlord
  • Biometric passport photograph and
  • Marriage certificate and birth certificates of children under the age of 18 (original and with German translation), if applicable

You can schedule an appointment for the registration online at the service portal of the city of Dortmund (DE).

The registration documents (registration certificate, tax identification number) as well as a letter of invitation to apply for a residence permit, if applicable, will be sent to you by mail afterwards. Please make sure that your mailbox is labelled accordingly.

If you do not belong to any of the groups mentioned above and have questions regarding the registration of residence, please contact the Welcome Services.

Change of Registration and Deregistration

A change of registration or deregistration of residence is also carried out via the respective registration office (Bürgerbüro).

If you move within Dortmund, you will need to re-register within a few weeks. For this purpose you will again need a confirmation from the landlord and the de-registration form (DE). In addition, you must bring all your identity cards and passports to re-register.

If you leave Dortmund completely, you only have to fill out the deregistration form and send it to Bürgerdienste Dortmund. If you need any help with the processing of your registration, please do not hesitate to contact us.

If your registration with the City of Dortmund was handled by the Welcome Services team, we can also cancel your registration for you. All you have to do is fill out the deregistration form and send it to us.

Important note: If you are moving, please inform your employer, the responsible personnel department and other relevant contact persons (insurance companies etc.) in good time.

Location & approach

The campus of TU Dortmund University is located close to interstate junction Dortmund West, where the Sauerlandlinie A 45 (Frankfurt-Dortmund) crosses the Ruhrschnellweg B 1 / A 40. The best interstate exit to take from A 45 is "Dortmund-Eichlinghofen" (closer to Campus Süd), and from B 1 / A 40 "Dortmund-Dorstfeld" (closer to Campus Nord). Signs for the university are located at both exits. Also, there is a new exit before you pass over the B 1-bridge leading into Dortmund.

To get from Campus Nord to Campus Süd by car, there is the connection via Vogelpothsweg/Baroper Straße. We recommend you leave your car on one of the parking lots at Campus Nord and use the H-Bahn (suspended monorail system), which conveniently connects the two campuses.

TU Dortmund University has its own train station ("Dortmund Universität"). From there, suburban trains (S-Bahn) leave for Dortmund main station ("Dortmund Hauptbahnhof") and Düsseldorf main station via the "Düsseldorf Airport Train Station" (take S-Bahn number 1, which leaves every 20 or 30 minutes). The university is easily reached from Bochum, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Duisburg.

You can also take the bus or subway train from Dortmund city to the university: From Dortmund main station, you can take any train bound for the Station "Stadtgarten", usually lines U41, U45, U 47 and U49. At "Stadtgarten" you switch trains and get on line U42 towards "Hombruch". Look out for the Station "An der Palmweide". From the bus stop just across the road, busses bound for TU Dortmund University leave every ten minutes (445, 447 and 462). Another option is to take the subway routes U41, U45, U47 and U49 from Dortmund main station to the stop "Dortmund Kampstraße". From there, take U43 or U44 to the stop "Dortmund Wittener Straße". Switch to bus line 447 and get off at "Dortmund Universität S".

The H-Bahn is one of the hallmarks of TU Dortmund University. There are two stations on Campus Nord. One ("Dortmund Universität S") is directly located at the suburban train stop, which connects the university directly with the city of Dortmund and the rest of the Ruhr Area. Also from this station, there are connections to the "Technologiepark" and (via Campus Süd) Eichlinghofen. The other station is located at the dining hall at Campus Nord and offers a direct connection to Campus Süd every five minutes.

The AirportExpress is a fast and convenient means of transport from Dortmund Airport (DTM) to Dortmund Central Station, taking you there in little more than 20 minutes. From Dortmund Central Station, you can continue to the university campus by interurban railway (S-Bahn). A larger range of international flight connections is offered at Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), which is about 60 kilometres away and can be directly reached by S-Bahn from the university station.

The facilities of TU Dortmund University are spread over two campuses, the larger Campus North and the smaller Campus South. Additionally, some areas of the university are located in the adjacent "Technologiepark".
